Firstly, I came from a mandarin speaking family, everyone around me speaks mandarin. Thus, the only time for me to speak English is when I'm in school. Therefore, this language can be extremely challenging for me to learn.
However, English language plays an important role in my life. Before I entered a University, I have to go through few stages of interviews:
First stage, a written essay on the introduction of myself.
Second stage, an interview with the course professors.
These 2 stages shows the importance of English in my life in order to get a place in the University.
Having a good command in English shows how confident and knowledgeable a person is through the way they speak. On the other hand, in future, having a good command in English creates a better career opportunity of jobs across the globe.
Being in the course of Sustainability Infrastructure Engineering, there will be a lot of overseas experiences. Hence, having a good proficiency in English is important.
Thank you, Kathleen, for this initial post. You do a decent job contextualizing the importance of English in the world. There is little argument, of course, about the place of this language on the world stage. What I would like to see more of though in this short essay is how English may be of importance specifically to YOU in your current studies and your future career. In short, it would be better to explain to me something I don't know rather than what is obvious to all. Write about, for example, why you need to further develop your English now and which steps you plan on taking to improve. Of course, all of this begins with a greater awareness of your needs.

4) In order to do well in English, we have to understand the basics on grammar well whereas for vocabulary is an additional bonus or knowledge for one to brush up on their own.

Hi Kathleen, a nice write up on the importance of English to you. However, I find that thats at a general level of showing why English is important to many. Maybe you'd like to share your personal experiences or any incidents that happened which hindered your progress in mastering English language etc.
